                                  Living and Training in Matamata:

MEFS is located in Matamata, a rural town with a population of just over 6000 people nestled at the bottom of the Kaimai Ranges, well known for its thoroughbred industry and dairy farming heritage. Matamata is internationally known as the location where Peter Jackson filmed "Hobbiton" for the Lord of the Rings movies. Since the launch of the Lord of the Rings movies and the subsequent opening of the Hobbiton Movie Set Tours just out of town, Matamata has become a vibrant visitor destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The flying school is at the Waharoa airfield - about 6 kms out of town. Up-drafts from the Kaimai Ranges create ideal conditions for gliding, making Matamata a world-renowned gliding site. The Waharoa airfield is also a popular base for skydiving.

Settled in the mid-1830s, Matamta is surrounded by jaw-dropping locales. The Wairere Falls and the Heritage trail are must-dos, as is the Hobbiton Movie Set tours. Less than an hour away are Tauranga, Hamilton and Rotorua, where you can have your fix of the city-lights as well as indulge in adventure sports including rock climbing, white-water rafting... the list is endless.
